Beyond the story
A bear whose world depends on the sea
Ursus maritimus means “sea bear”. Polar bears are closely connected to Arctic waters and the sea ice above them. Their scientific name was given in 1774, but their story as a species began long before that.
Where is home?
Sea ice is a hunting platform. Polar bears search for seals at breathing holes and openings in the ice. Their movements depend on where the ice and prey are, and they may travel enormous distances over a season.
A life in the wild
Ringed and bearded seals are important prey. Mothers give birth to very small cubs, which rely on them for warmth, milk and protection. As the cubs grow, they learn the skills needed for life in the Arctic.
A future worth protecting
A warming climate is changing the sea ice that polar bears depend on. Research helps scientists understand these changes, while work with northern communities supports safer coexistence between people and bears.
